Jotunheimen with dogsledge-support (vv27)

lørdag 13. mars kl. 17:45 · Tyin

This dog sled tour takes some classic routes through the Jotunheimen nationalpark, threading between the highest mountains in Norway. It ends each day with dinner and good conversations. A wonderful skiing holiday awaits you. On this trip we are accompanied by an eager dog team which will take some of your gear for you. Our permanent dog-sledge guide, Chris, and our musher Petter, are looking forward to joining you on this special trip through Jotunheimen. Sledge dogs The polar dogs are social and like to have interaction with people. Participants are welcome to have contact with the dogs - Alaskan huskies - with feeding, spanning and helping out the musher. The dog team will take a maximum of 4 kg of your gear. The luggage sent with the dog team needs to be packed in a robust waterproof bag, of about 12 – 15 litres volume. The waterproof bags used for kayaking are recommended. Mark the bag with your name and telephone number. The dog sled will not always be with the group, so bring things you need (including bivouac equipment) during the day in your rucksack. Itinerary Saturday 13 March: Meet at Tyin – Snowcat to Fondsbu (1061m) We meet at 17.45 at Tyin. (See suggestions for bus/transport further down in the trip information.) From here you'll be transported all the way to Fondsbu by snowcat, departing Tyin at 18.00, about 19 km. On arrival there's room allocation and dinner. Afterwards we gather in the lounge to plan the coming days' routes, and to introduce ourselves and the dogs. Sunday 14 March: Fondsbu–Skogadalsbøen (830m)(22km – 9 hours ) Today’s route takes us westwards the spectacular Hurrungane mountains. The route threads through steep sided valleys and across the Kvite & Uradals lakes before finally descending into birchwood where we find the beautifully positioned Skogadalsbøen lodge. (500m ascent, 700m descent). Monday 15 March: Skogadalsbøen–Leirvassbu (1420m)(20km – 8 hours) Today is about steady ascent through deeply glaciated alpine valleys. The general direction is north east, as we regain the altitude lost on the previous day. The Leirvassbu lodge has a long history and is situated close to many of Jotunheim’s best known mountains. (700m ascent, 100m descent). Tuesday 16 March: Leirvassbu–Gjendebu (990m)(19km – 7 hours) After breakfast, we prepare for a long downhill day. The route heads south-east towards Gjende. We first climb to the pass at 1518 m, cross Langvatnet at 1367 m, and descend through Storådalen. Look forward to reaching the long Lake Gjende and Gjendebu lodge. (200m ascent, 700m descent). Wednesday 17 March: Rest Day at Gjendebu We take a rest day, with the option of a dog-sledding trip or a short ski trip from the lodge for those who wish. Gjendebu is a good place to spend time, both indoors and out. Thursday 18 March: Gjendebu–Olavsbu (1440m)(15km – 6 hours) Today we head to the self-service cabin at Olavsbu. It sits high and open, among striking peaks, with views towards Hurrungane in the west. The route starts with a gentle climb before flattening out for the last few kilometres to the cabin. Tonight’s dinner is cooked by the group, so look forward to a creative evening. (500m ascent, 0m descent). Friday 19 March: Olavsbu–Fondsbu (1061m)(17km – 6 hours) We eat a good breakfast, clean up after ourselves at the cabin, and get ready for another memorable day. The terrain is varied and enjoyable throughout. The final descent towards Bygdin is fairly long and steep, but with steady, controlled skiing it will become one of the trip's most valuable memories. Once at Fondsbu, look forward to a hot shower and dinner. The lodge manager might even treat you to a traditional song before dinner. (150m ascent, 550m descent). Saturday 20 March: Fondsbu–Tyin (1100m) (19 km – 5 hours) We take a relaxed breakfast before setting off towards Tyin. Anyone who wants snowcat transport to Tyin must book this at Fondsbu (this transport is not included in the trip package). The ski route crosses the lake if conditions allow, or otherwise follows the snowcat track by the road. Skiing along or across Tyin is a demanding stretch, but above all, a beautiful one.
